In Conversation With Australian Wedding Florist Krysta Smith

Once named Wedding Planner of the Year in the UK, Krysta Smith has since redefined her craft as a floral artist and event designer in Australia. Blending her background in planning with a love of flowers, she creates celebrations that feel seamless, soulful, and beautifully composed.

Who is Krysta Smith, and how did the brand begin?

I’m an event designer and florist with over a decade of experience in weddings and celebrations. My journey began in wedding planning, where I developed a love for weaving together all the moving parts of an event into something timeless and meaningful. Over the years, I noticed that flowers weren’t just décor; they are often the soul of the storytelling. That realisation (alongside a Global Pandemic) sparked my evolutionary pivot into floral artistry, and from there, my studio grew into what it is today: a space where design, detail, and artistry meet.

When did you start your floral and event design studio, and what inspired the shift into floristry?

When I moved from the UK to Australia, it happened to be right as the global pandemic hit. I had just been awarded Wedding Planner of the Year and was working with a beautifully full calendar, only to watch almost overnight as two to three years of celebrations unravelled into postponements and cancellations. It was heartbreaking; seeing couples lose money, time, and joy, and watching so many of my dear vendor friends lose their businesses and livelihoods. In that strange pause, I had the chance to stop and really think about what I wanted. I’d always dreamed of working with flowers, so I finally took the leap and trained as a florist. Years on, those two worlds have naturally come back together. These days, I get to bring both sides of my experience into one place; planning and florals side by side, which feels like the most honest version of the work I was always meant to do.

What does your studio specialise in today?

Today, my studio specialises in high-end floral artistry and full event design for weddings, private celebrations, and select corporate clients. We create immersive experiences that feel as good as they look, blending abundant, refined florals with thoughtful design details. I work closely with clients who value creativity, storytelling, and a seamless process.

How would you describe your floral style and approach?

My floral style is layered, organic, and painterly; influenced by Dutch Masters still lifes, English heritage gardens, and European markets. I love combining the romance of heritage blooms with the texture of Australian natives, creating something that feels both timeless and modern. My approach is collaborative and holistic: I don’t see flowers as stand-alone elements, for me, they’re part of the bigger story that runs through the whole celebration.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

Travel, nature and art play a huge role in my inspiration, from the colours of a harbour sunset in Sydney, to a Matisse sketch, to the wild abundance of landscapes and gardens. But most of all, I’m inspired by my clients’ stories. Every couple, every brand, every celebration has its own rhythm, and I love translating that into something tangible and beautiful through flowers and design. For William and Simmie, it was about showing them that their day should be full of joyful colour, as they are two of the most joyful people you will meet, which completely transformed the way they saw their wedding. For Jason and Maclean, we used their favourite flowers as a way of honouring loved ones no longer with us, weaving memory and meaning into every detail. For others, it might be reflecting heritage or personal passions, like incorporating South African natives or Dutch tulips as a quiet nod to family roots. It’s always about listening first and then letting those stories take shape through the flowers and the design.

What makes your work unique in the wedding and events world?

I bring the dual expertise of an award-winning planner and a floral artist, which means I’m able to see both the fine artistry and the big picture. My clients value that blend: the confidence that logistics are handled seamlessly, paired with a creative vision that feels truly bespoke. It’s this balance, creativity grounded in experience, that sets my work apart.

What have been some highlights or proud moments so far?

Some of my proudest moments have been seeing clients walk into their space for the first time and gasp; that visceral reaction of joy is why I do what I do.

There have been big milestones too, like winning UK Wedding Planner of the Year, then moving my entire life and business across the world and starting again from scratch. To have rebuilt in Australia and now be trusted to travel interstate, to DC, and even to Italy to design, deliver, and flower weddings and events feels incredibly special.

Being asked to create the florals on The Fall Guy in my very first year as a floral designer was a pinch-me moment, and since then working on major campaigns for Uber Eats, Stylerunner, and Puma has been such an exciting extension of my work.

Another highlight was when Lucy, The Flower Hunter invited me to co-host a workshop with her; something I never could have imagined in my second year of floristry, and just my third year here in Australia. To see that sell out and be so warmly received was a real “full-circle” moment.

But honestly, the proudest thread that runs through all of it is trust, whether it’s couples letting me into their most personal moments, clients giving me creative freedom, or brands believing in my vision.

And, of course, balancing all of this with being a mum, wife, and friend. That part isn’t always easy, but I think it’s what allows me to bring a deeper empathy to my clients - reminding them that weddings, while beautiful, can also be stressful, and it helps to have someone by your side who’s walked through big life moments too.

What’s next for Krysta Smith?

The next chapter for me is about finding balance and building a studio that feels intentional, sustainable, and creatively fulfilling. Weddings will always be at the heart of what I do, but how we deliver them is evolving.

As the team grows, I’m excited to welcome more planning clients back on board, which means we can once again offer that full-service experience where the flowers, the design, and the logistics all flow together under one roof. It feels like such a natural continuation of my journey, bringing together my background in planning with the artistic storytelling I’ve found in florals.

At the same time, I’m carving out space for creative projects that really fill my cup: hosting intimate workshops, collaborating with brands I admire, and creating installations that challenge me to see flowers in fresh ways. These moments of play and sharing feel just as rewarding as the weddings themselves, and they keep the work evolving.

What excites me most, though, is shaping a business with longevity. One that lets me keep creating beauty but also gives me the space to be present with my family and to live a life alongside the work. For me, the future isn’t about doing more for the sake of it, but about doing the right things, in the right way, with the right people.
